What makes a crib mattress safe for my baby?

A safe crib mattress is firm, flat, fits snugly inside the crib with no gaps, and has a tightly fitted sheet. It should be free of loose parts, rips, or sagging and should meet current safety standards. Soft surfaces, pillow-tops, or thick padding are not recommended for young infants.
