What is the two-finger gap rule?

The two-finger rule means that when the mattress is pushed to one side of the crib, the gap between the mattress and the crib frame should be less than the width of two adult fingers. Larger gaps may pose an entrapment hazard and mean the mattress is not the right size for the crib.
