What are foam density ratings?

Foam density ratings measure the weight of the foam per cubic foot, which directly relates to the foam’s overall quality. Although density is often confused with firmness, it actually has no direct impact on how stiff or soft the foam feels. Foam firmness is determined by ILD (Indentation Load Deflection), which is covered in a separate topic.

• Polyfoam Density: The average density for polyfoam in mattresses is around 1.8 lbs./ft³. Lower densities (below 1.8 lbs./ft³) typically indicate lower-quality foam, while higher densities (above 1.8 lbs./ft³) offer increased durability and are more suitable for heavier individuals.
• Memory Foam Density: For memory foam, the average density is around 4 lbs./ft³. Increasing the density usually makes the mattress heavier and more expensive, but it will last longer and resist breakdown over time.
