How does a mattress feel compared to a soft or firm mattress?

A medium-firm mattress feels more supportive and less sinky than a plush/soft bed, but not as rigid or flat as a very firm mattress. You'll feel some contouring and pressure relief, but you'll stay more on top of the bed rather than deeply cradled.
