Do I need a special frame for a mattress?

You don't necessarily need a special frame, but you do need one that offers proper support. Ensure slats are close enough together (usually no more than a few inches apart), that the frame doesn't flex excessively, and that any center support bars are present for larger sizes like queen and king.
