What is coil gauge, and why does it matter?

Coil gauge refers to the thickness of the wire used in the springs; a lower number means a thicker, firmer coil, while a higher number means a thinner, more flexible coil. Mattresses with lower gauge coils tend to feel firmer and more supportive, whereas higher gauge coils can feel softer and more conforming.
